Vinita Y. Mayfield Brown was born March 2, 1938 to the late John Mayfield Sr. and Theresa Johnson Mayfield in Hamlin, Texas. They had no way of knowing this tiny baby would one day impact the life of so many people. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and friend to many. Vinita was baptized at an early age. It was then that she became involved in working in the church. She was married to the love of her life, James Arthur Brown, and from this union they had a son, Michael James Brown, whom she loved dearly. After the death of her mother, Vinita and James became the adoptive parents of her baby brother, David Roy Brown, and the foster parents of nephews, Gary Sheffield and Roscoe Eugene Brown. Her motherly love was always there, and she loved them as if they were her own children.Vinita began her formal education in Hamlin, Texas where she graduated from Oscar DePrist High School. Committed to making her mark as the second member of the Mayfield family to receive a degree, she obtained her Licensed Vocational Nursing degree from Baylor School of Nursing. Later she obtained her Registered Nursing Degree from Odessa College. She enjoyed her career as a nurse. Her professional career led her to work in numerous hospitals throughout the USA as well as Germany. Later, she transitioned to Midland ISD as a school nurse, where she retired after working with young children for twenty-eight years.Vinita was an active member of Greater Ideal Baptist Church until she moved to Houston, Texas. For several years she taught CLER and Sunday school to young children. After relocating to Houston, she united with The Windsor Village United Methodist Church where she was active in the Diamond and Pearls Ministry. She loved good music. Whenever there was a Gospel Concert at church, you could always find her there seated on the front row praising God through song. She loved her pastor and church family and enjoyed each opportunity to fellowship with them. Her community involvement led her to volunteer for CASA De Omega (Court Appointed Special Advocates) where she advocated for abused and/or neglected children. While in Houston, she volunteered using her nursing skills at Peaceful Tranquility Hospice. One of her greatest moments of enjoyment was time spent with the ETANA Women’s Group (Energetic Thinkers Admiring Noble Attributes) an elite group of ladies donating to local charities.Vinita is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, and brothers, Louis Calvin Brown and William Henry Brown. She is survived by her loving and supportive brothers, John R.
