Curtis Glen Flanagan, 89, of Stanton, died Friday, January 6, 2017 at the Martin County Hospital following a long illness. Funeral mass will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stanton. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday, January 9, 2017 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.Curtis’s family dates back to the first settlement in Martin County and the establishment of the Catholic Church in Marienfeld (later Stanton) in 1881. He was born on July 22, 1927 to the late Walter Curtis (Curt) and Annie Mary (Peters) Flanagan.Curtis graduated from Stanton High School and enlisted in the United States Navy on August 1, 1945, serving in World War II for 11 months until the dismissal of troops in June 1946. He was drafted into the United States Army in September 1950 at the beginning of the Korean War. He married Billie Lorine Tucker of originally of Coahoma, Texas on March 27, 1951 in Colorado Springs, Colorado while serving in the United States Army. They were later stationed in Anchorage, Alaska where their two eldest children were born. Upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in September 1957, he and Billie moved back to Martin County, Texas where he worked as a mechanic for White Motor Company. In 1966, Curtis started his long career as a cotton farmer on the family land.Curtis is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Billie Flanagan of Stanton; one son, William Curtis Flanagan and wife Betty, of Stanton; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Cook and husband, Mike of Dumas, and Leah Susan Flanagan of Stanton; four grandchildren, Kara Leann Ulibarri and husband, Monty, William Coryn Flanagan and wife Katherine, Jared Glenn Cook and wife Rachel, and Sean David Flanagan and wife Hali; three great granddaughters, Marlee Elizabeth Ulibarri, Leena Rose Flanagan; and Victoria Ann Flanagan; and two sisters, Annie L. Fox of Big Spring, and Margaret Franks of Stanton.In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Wayne Cook.The family gives heartfelt thanks to Mary Ann Leal, Teresa Booth and Adela Cantu for their dedicated and loving care over the last three years.The family also thanks the staff of Home Hospice of Big Spring for their care and attention as well as the nursing staff of the Martin County Hospital for their care during his final days. Memorials may be made in Curtis’ name to the charity of the donor's choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbreath Funeral Home of Stanton.
