Thomas Gordon Newman, 72, of Midland, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2015. Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland.Tom was born on July 13, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida to Mary Griffits Newman and Frederick Herbert Newman. He graduated from high school in Gainesville, Florida and moved to Texas with his brother where he attended The University of Texas in Austin. While in Austin, he met the love of his life, Ann, and they married August 5, 1966. In 1969, Ann and Tom moved to Midland where he continued in the Insurance and Financial Services business. He became an independent agent in 1971 and worked passionately to take care of clients until his death. He loved his business and treated all his clients like friends. He served in the National Guard, was an active member of the Jaycees, and coached Special Olympics basketball for 19 years. He and Ann loved to travel and spend time with family at the ranch. He had a lifelong love for sports especially basketball, baseball and Longhorn football. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandson Alex graduate from The University of Texas in May. He rarely missed one of his kids or grandkids games. He would even travel to watch his friends’ children play. Tom was a scratch golfer for years and an avid fisherman. He planned many golfing and fishing trips with his son and sons in law. He made many friends while fishing and golfing that he cherished. Tom loved music, cooking and was the life of every party. He never met a stranger and people always felt welcome in his home.He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ann Newman of Midland; daughter Caaren Newman Wooliscroft of Abilene, Tx and husband Kent, their children, Alex (Austin, Tx), Jeffrey, and Annie; son Ted Newman of Austin, Tx and wife Sherry, their children, Wyatt and Ella; daughter Ashley Newman Gotovac of Midland and children Victoria, Porter, and Gage. Brother Herbert Newman and wife Myra of Tampa Florida and their children Melanie, Scott, and Frederick; Sisters-in-law Liz Jones and husband Stan and their children Megan, Philip, and Ross; Loren Rich and husband John and their children Jennifer Wetmore and husband Jason, and Kasey Weishuhn and husband Jonathan and their children Hayden, Kinsley, and Logan and many lifelong friends that he thought of as family.Honorary Pall Bearers are Bob Gotovac, Ron Pepper, Craig Winborn, Dan Brown, Steve Davidson, David Sharp, and Jack Sharrick.In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be donated to the Special Olympics Midland.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory.
