Larry J JohnsonLarry Junior Johnson, 68, of Midland, passed away November 30, 2015 at home from Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Lymphoma. Larry was born May 5, 1947 in Stockton, CA to Bertha Pannell Johnson and William Paul Johnson. He grew up in the Stockton area and graduated from Escalon High School in 1965.After high school, Larry entered the Air Force. During his career, he traveled the world. His last duty station was Brooks AFB in San Antonio, TX. In 1988, as a Master Sergeant, he received the Meritorious Service Medal for his outstanding performance as Superintendent of the Hyperbaric Medicine Division. During this period, He was vital to the continued success of the Air Force Clinical Hyperbaric Medicine Program, serving as primary operational consultant to ten Departments of Defense hyperbaric facilities worldwide. He was directly responsible for establishing the educational criteria by which all hyperbaric chamber technicians are trained. Later that same year, Larry decided that after 23 years he was ready to retire.While stationed at Brooks AFB, he met Cynthia (Cindi) Moore Knight, the love of his life, and best friend. The couple was married September 26, 1981 and became a readymade family. Because of Larry’s influence, their three children have a strong bond that will continue throughout their lives.After retirement, he moved to Midland and went to work for Midland ISD. Larry retired from MISD in 2012.Larry enjoyed working on anything around the house, but cars were his favorite. He had rebuilt several since he was a teenager; his final projects were Cindi’s 1967 Plymouth and his famous blue 1966 Ford truck.Larry loved riding his Harley and keeping its chrome brightly polished.One of his neighbors described Larry as “a truly genuine person” and anyone that knew him knows it’s true.Larry was a member of Stonegate Fellowship.In lieu of a funeral service, he will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a later time and will be announced at a later date.Larry is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cynthia Johnson; his children, Rachel Johnson, Brian Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth of Houston, Kallena Abalos and her husband, Joaquin of Midland; grandchildren, Austin Johnson, Molly Abalos, and Cain Abalos; brother, Glenn and wife, Jane Johnson Seguin, TX; and brother, Gary and wife, Lori Johnson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; mother-in-law, Jo Fenton of Coleman, TX; brother-in-law, Jesse Moore of Coleman, TX; and numerous loving cousins.He is preceded in death by his parents.The family would like to thank Midland Memorial Hospital Critical Care staff especially Dr. Syed Mehdi and the wonderful nurses and aides and the radiology staff Joe Bejil, Kimberly and the others that helped us through the past month.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
