Alfred T. (Toby) Carleton, Jr. of Midland, was born March 5, 1929 in Houston, Texas to Alfred T. Carleton, Sr. and Winnie Snell Carleton. He grew up in Houston, and attended school there. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston in 1947. He then attended the University of Texas in Austin, from which he earned a BS in Geology in 1951 and a MA in Geology in 1952. During his time at the University, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. It was through this association that he was introduced to a cute little blue-eyed blond named Corinne Phillips from Ozona, Texas. They were married on June 20, 1953 and she became his best friend, business partner, and love of his life for some 63 years.His work experience includes: Geologist with the Ohio Oil Company (now Marathon), Chief Geologist with Zapata Petroleum Corporation (merged into Pennzoil Company), General Partner in Structurmaps, Ltd., Vice President and Western Division Manager for Pogo Producing Company (later sold to Plains Exploration and Development). Most of his professional career has been as an independent geologist or managing his own businesses. He was President of Tocor Investments, Inc. (a family business), and Member in Imperial Operating company (with his son, Phil). He and his wife also operated ranches in Crockett and Val Verde Counties, Texas. Phil is hunting manager in these enterprises.Professional activities include: President of West Texas Geological Society, Chairman Midland Chapter Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientist, Chairman of House of Delegates and President of American Association of Petroleum Geologists and National President of SIPES. Professional honors include Honorary Membership in West Texas Geological Society, SIPES and AAPG.Social and Community activities and/or memberships include Midland Country Club, Petroleum Club (past President), Exchange Club of Midland (past President), and Dirty Dozen Luncheon Club. He and his wife are long time members of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.Toby loved to travel and he and Corinne (and the children when they were younger) traveled extensively. They have driven around and through all 50 states and have been in every province of Canada. They have traveled in much of the Caribbean. In addition they have been to many countries in Europe, Asia, South America and Central America, Africa, and have toured New Zealand, Australia, the Bahamas and Bermuda.More than any of the above, however, he was a loving and devoted husband, a caring father, and a doting grandfather to his 6 grandchildrenToby was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister Carolyn Carleton Reynolds and her husband Roy Reynolds of Austin, Texas, and several cousins.Toby is survived by his loving wife, Corinne Carleton, his children: Cathy Carleton Martin and David Martin of Kerrville, Texas; Elaine Carleton and Dori Dejong of Denver Colorado; Phil Carleton and Kim of Midland, Texas; sister-in-law, Diane Phillips of Estes Park, Colorado. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Michael and Dustin Martin of Kerrville, Texas, Caden DeJong of Denver, Colorado, and McKenzie, Madison and Sam Carleton of Midland, Texas. Other survivors include his nephew Ronney Reynolds and wife Mary of Austin, Texas and niece Nancy Springen and husband Clyde of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by several cousins.Honorary pallbearers will be, Bill Fisher, Charles Fraser, Gary Garlitz, Jim Gibbs, Bill Gipson, Will Green, Bob Holvorsen, Jim Lucas, Jim McAnelly, Budge McDonnold, Charles Pruitt, Duer Wagner, Jr., and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Brothers.A special thanks to Ceasar Carrillo for all of his care and friendship for Toby over the last year.In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be donated to The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, 1412 W.
